About Cider Mill Cottage

The cottage and garden overlook our own fields and towards  distant woodland, and lie in the grounds of a listed country house, once the Rectory of How Caple with the adjacent village of Sollershope, where the manor was owned by the Whittington family and where Dick was brought up. (He did not walk to London with  his belongings in a handkerchief on a stick, but was an entrepreneurial Lord Mayor of the City of London in his early twenties and an astute wool dealer.) The entire cottage is constructed of timber framing, sandstone walls and a tiled roof. The walls are dry-lined to give added insulation. The attractive windows are double-glazed.

Bedrooms (2)

The cottage sleeps 4 and has been restored recently to provide a comfortable, attractive and well-furnished home.
The two bedrooms have plenty of space, with fitted carpets and very comfortable beds. They are both en-suite; one has twin beds, the other has a king size bed. In the winter all beds enjoy the advantage of electrically heated blankets, which are checked annually. The good quality duvets have a high -Tog. rating. Hypo-allergenic pillows can be supplied on request. There are wardrobes with hangers in each room.

Bathrooms (2)

The en-suite bathroom to the twin room has a wash basin, w.c. and shower. The bathroom for the double bedroom is large and has a washbasin  bath with shower, w.c. and linen cupboard.

Towels are large and fluffy, and renewed regularly. The towel rails are electrically heated in both bathrooms and the floors are tiled. Both have shaver points.

Accessibility

The twin bedroom is down five steps to the ground floor and the kitchen is four steps down,  but also on the ground floor. All these are carpeted. It does however mean that access to all rooms for a wheelchair-bound person is not possible. The cottage was originally designed for the owner’s 87 year old mother and presents no problems for the elderly,  physically mobile, nor for the use of a Guide Dog.

Children

A travel cot (kite marked) a high chair and a stair-gate are available on request. We do not provide cot bedding as babies seem to prefer their own.  We are very family friendly.

Sitting Room

The Sitting Room is in the original, heavily-beamed granary. This is a light and airy room with attractive French doors, which can be opened in good weather. The doors have an ornate, external metal balcony rail to ensure the safety of children and dogs. In the inglenook is a large woodburner for which dry logs are provided free of charge. There are two comfortable sofas with fitted covers, and easy chairs, and a library bookcase holding fiction, local information, guides , maps and a selection of DVDs. There is a 42″ SMART Ultra HD TV, Sky +HD, Talk, unlimited  Broadband and Wifi. There is also a digital DVD player. An antique gate leg table is provided for those who prefer to eat out of the kitchen. The room has a fitted carpet. Attractive wall lights and two table lamps provide good and flexible lighting. A number of games, playing cards and jigsaws are available and a small library of DVDs.

Kitchen

The farmhouse style kitchen has fitted units backed by pretty tiles with country themes, with an extractor fan and lighting over the cooker area and sink. A stable door leads out to a flag-stoned courtyard, with roses and planted containers. There is a table at one end of the kitchen to seat 4-6 , with a rise and fall light. The cupboards are well supplied with dishwasher-safe cutlery, attractive china and glass.

The kitchen
There are plenty of cooking utensils for a keen cook and all the usual electrical appliances needed in the home ; Electric hob, with self-cleaning Neff oven beneath, microwave,  refrigerator with freezer section, kettle, coffee maker, toaster and steam iron. There is a Bosch washing machine and dishwasher. Walkers’ wet clothing can be dried overnight in Garraway House, where there are excellent drying facilities. There is a multi-surface Dyson cylinder vacuum cleaner.  Appliances are checked by a qualified electrician annually. The flooring throughout the kitchen area is easy-clean ceramic tiles . Groceries ordered on-line in advance can be stored and taken over in time for your arrival. Please give the owner plenty of warning of the delivery date and time.

Gardens

The gardens are adjacent to our Miniature Donkey Stud Farm, and the friendly little donkeys love to meet visitors over the fence. There is a  gravelled area leading to  well-fenced grass on which is a summerhouse with far distant views. Garden chairs, a table, a charcoal barbeque and an upholstered swing seat are out here in the summer months, otherwise stored in the integral garage. A sack of Herefordshire Charcoal is supplied to each visiting group.

PLEASE NOTE:

Cider Mill Cottage is NON-SMOKING. One well-behaved dog is welcome, but not on soft furnishings or beds please. There is ample off-road parking space.

Christmas at Garraway
