LOCAL HISTORY AND CULTURE :
Castles, abbeys and cathedrals abound in this fascinating part of Britain, once the ancient and powerful Kingdom of Mercia. Many country houses and gardens, both National Trust and privately owned, are open to the public. This is Elgar country, home of the Elgar Birthplace Museum, The Three Choirs Festival, and the annual Hay-on-Wye Literary Festival. The area is popular with artists and craftsmen, many of whom exhibit in local galleries, or in their own studios.

WALKING :
Walkers staying in the cottages are specially catered for, and we supply a Brochure of 25 walks to suit all energies. Details of these self-guided walks come with suggested routes, as well as maps. There is an abundance of local information in the well-stocked cottage libraries. Car transport can be arranged to collect walkers at the end of a linear walk. The Wye Valley Walk crosses through the village 400 yards below Garraway House.

WILD-LIFE :
Natural History lovers will see plenty to interest them; Buzzards nest in the grounds and Fly-catchers have recently joined us. Little and Tawny Owls nest close to the cottages. For those prepared to walk quietly along the Wye in the early morning, otters can sometimes be seen. The National Birds of Prey Centre at Newent is only 5 miles away and the Wetlands and Wildfowl Trust at Slimbridge is an easy hour's drive.

| GOOD-LIVING : In this fertile valley of The River Wye locally-produced vegetables and fruit, as well as famous Herefordshire beef, Gloucester Old Spot pork and Ryeland lamb are among the superb food you will find for sale and served in our many excellent pubs and restaurants. Herefordshire boasts a pub with a Michelin rosette and there are several excellent pub restaurants within a radius of 3-4 miles of the cottages. If you prefer to eat good food in the cottages, a list can be provided of fresh and ready-prepared foods available from our Herefordshire and Wye valley farm-to-table producers. These will be purchased to order and placed in your refrigerator at no extra cost. Two Rick Stein Food heroes figure on the list, among those producing ready prepared foods; always a bonus for a cook on holiday. Visit the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) website. | |

MEET THE ANIMALS :
Those with children will enjoy meeting our gentle, friendly Miniature Donkeys who graze the land around the cottages. Holly and Rosetta came to us from Ohio, USA, and Stella, Meagan and Annie, came from Texas, all in 2005. They are regularly shown in-hand and visitors are welcome to help with their care and training, if they are interested. All the donkeys love attention. A Rare Breeds Farm 2 miles away also provides an opportunity for children to meet animals.
